NTDP Wins in Shootout

With the World Junior A Challenge in full swing, another event has flown under the radar in Lake Placid, New York. The Under-18 Four Nations tournament got underway yesterday. The National Team Development Program defeated Switzerland Tuesday 4-2. Last night, they defeated Finland in a shootout 5-4.This tournament is being shown on the USA Hockey Website. I caught the final two periods of the Finland games and it was an entertaining contest. The Star of the game in my eyes was Mikael Grunlund of Finland. The play making abilities this kid has is unbelievable. He had three assists. He will be draft eligible in 2010. I don't have him listed in my Players to Watch for 2010 but he's going in that category. His line mate Toni Rajala had two goals which were set up Grunlund.For the Americans, Brandon Maxwell likes to play the puck. Some points he almost cost the team because of his aggressive play. He acted like a third defenseman out there. I was just waiting him to breakout like this goaltender.Cam Fowler can skate. He caught I believe Rajala on a short handed breakaway. I have heard he's isn't that physical. I couldn't really tell if he shyed was from the physical play.Jeremy Morin and Drew Shore had pretty good games. Morin had a shootout goal. The combo was back together. From the webcast, it seems like they put on different lines for the last few weeks. Kyle Palmieri was used on the point on powerplays. He has a good shot already.Overall you can see that there's chemistry on the Under-18 team. Everybody worked together. They were their best when they were on a 5-3 penalty kill which seemed went on for most of the second period. Jerry D'Amigo checked a Finnish player into the boards and got a five minute major and a game misconduct. It was no intention to injury but it was a nasty spill. The player skated off under his own power. USA had two minor penalties within that five minutes. The game was tied a 4 at that point but were able to kill all the penalties off. USA plays Sweden tomorrow at 4pm. Go to USA Hockey to catch the webcast or the audiocast.The Under 17 team is in Switzerland for their 4 Nations tournament. They defeated the host country in an exhibition 5-0 yesterday.The Going Five Hole Blog is reporting that the/nhl Network will be showing Team USA's Games at the World Junior Championships in Ottawa this year. This is very good news that USA's games will be on TV. I am assuming they will be picking up the Medal Round again this year. I think they should go ahead and pick up Canada's games also. Our very own Minnesota Wild is playing in Denver against the Colorado Avalanche tonight at the Pepsi Center. This will be Andrew Burnette's first time facing off against his old team, and he seems pretty apprehensive about it. Lucky for him, his mentor Joe Sakic more than likely won't be on the ice, so he won't have to walk skate on eggshells too much. What is it with these hockey players? I get it, you used to play on the team, they're your friends, nostalgia is great. But this is business. Friends off the ice. Fight til the end on the ice.I'm getting my hair done this evening. I let the summer blonde stay in a little long this year, but tonight we'll be going a little darker. Booooooo I want a tan...Did you know that Jared Allen of the Minnesota Vikings roster has his own blog on the Pioneer Press website? Kind of interesting, and beat my expectations upon reading it based on my initial reaction when I heard about it. The only other blog written by a football player that I've read is on the KFAN website, by Minnesota's own Mike Morris, and that's...quite a blog. Nicole is in love with....Jared Allen (haha NS, betcha weren't expecting THAT name to be at the end of the sentence), so she's going to be extra excited about this blog. So to mix things up a bit, I'm going to do a little daily installment post of "what I learned from JA's blog today" for the rest of the week. And each post will somehow link back to the Minnesota Wild. Get excited.Our Minnesota Wild roster is part of a featured article on THN by Edward Fraser, which actually comes from an article from the Twin Cities own John Shipley. A few of the Wild players gave their thoughts on the possible relocation of.nhl teams from the southern belt to the northern region. I have to say that I really agree with those who voiced their opinions in the article, that the.nhl would be much better off by moving those struggling teams in the south to a northern US or Canadian market where they have a strong hockey fanbase that will support the team (aka buy.nhl tickets).Again on the Winter Classic: I want to go. Pens v Oilers (W 5-4)

It may be an oxymoron, but MAN what a frustrating win! The recap follows Friend of The Show Moriah W.'s photos from the unveiling of the 3rd jersey:So today (11/05/08) they premiered the new 3rd jersey. Godard, Goligoski, Kennedy, Letang and Bissonette were the "models". They answered questions and did trivia with the crowd and rewarded correct answers with $25 Dicks gift cards.Steigy emceed the event. The guys were very personable. When a girl yelled out "Kennedy's my future husband" he totally blushed and Biznasty didn't miss a beat in teasing him about it. Godard surprised me with how interactive he was (I just have it stuck in my head that the fighters are tough guys off the ice); he stayed afterwards for quite awhile signing things for the crowd-which was massive!FIRST PERIODBack to back giveaways to Miroslav Satan led to chances for Mad Max Talbot and Siddo respectively, but Mathieu Garon stopped them both. The Oilers developed a 3-on-2 early, but Marc-Andre Fleury robbed Fernando Pisani in front of the goal. Mad Max and the Saint looked amazing together. (At this point in my notes, I actually wrote a reminder that I needed to mention that I thought that something big was about to happen for them...) Max fired a shot that Garon was able to block but not cover. He went down on the play, and the puck was in front of an open corner with Sid right there on the doorstep. Ordinarily, I'd be telling you about a goal, but tonight, Garon stunned the world with his wrist strength when he reached our behind himself, put his stick down, and swept the puck off the goal line and down to his side. O_o Shortly thereafter, Eric Godard and the larger Steve MacIntyre decided to do the man-dance: Advantage: Godard. :)The Oilers got their first power play when Daryl Sydor was called for holding. The Pens looked great on the penalty kill and prevented the Oilers from scoring on their advantage. After the Pens had something like 137 chances on one particular shift, Satan scored the most beautiful goal I've seen all season. As he skated past the near goalpost, he put the puck between his own legs and angled the puck into the net from behind himself. UNREAL!!! [Pens 1, Oilers 0]Jordan Staal made a key save just as Kris Letang was called for slashing. Remember, the PENGUINS were shorthanded as Siddo stole the puck and went 2-on-1 with Mad Max. Sid shot the puck, Garon made a pad save, and the rebound went right to Mad Max, who promptly scored the shorthanded goal. [Pens 2, Oilers 0] Upon watching the replay, Bob Errey seemed convinced that Sid purposely aimed for Garon's pad hoping for it to do exactly what it did. What a player! The Oilers didn't score on their power play.Sydor made a nice diving poke check to clear the puck to center ice. Then MacIntyre leveled the MUCH smaller Letang, knocking his helmet off and cutting the bridge of his nose. He made his way to the bench where he doubled over in pain. And while it was a douchey move, it wasn't illegal, so no penalty was issued. Godard immediately hit the ice and went after MacIntyre for a rematch, but Sheldon Souray (who is a much braver human being than I am) would not remove himself from between the two giants. As a result, Godard was given a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct with 2 minutes left in the period. Hal Gill made a great save that Staal then cleared, and Letang returned to the ice to help keep the Oilers scoreless through the end of the first period.SECOND PERIODCan I just say it right now? The 81-87-25 line is absolutely brilliant. The three of them are unbelievably good together. :) Gill was called for tripping. Shawn Horcoff fired a wicked shot that forced Flower to make another great save. Mad Max has shown he is MORE than worthy of his self-imposed nickname - he really is a Superstar! He went for two more shorthanded chances. Both were denied, but he definitely earned an E for effort! Sid made a few sick stick handling moves and drew a delayed penalty on an Oiler. MAF was pulled in favor of the extra attacker. As the Pens launched an assault on Garon, there was a second penalty called against the Oilers. Geno Malkin fired a shot on goal that Satan redirected into the net. [Pens 3, Oilers 0]The goal negated the original penalty, but Erik Cole went to the box for tripping. The Pens didn't score on their power play. As Cole came out of the box, the Oilers had a 2-on-1, but Flower made a big save. Matt Cooke took a run at Dustin Penner but missed and went flying. Right off a faceoff, Geno got the puck and quickly sent it to Petr Sykora, who scored with a quick wrister. [Pens 4, Oilers 0]Flower made another great save. Siddo backchecked and stole the puck. In doing so, he drew a slashing penalty on Sam Gagner. Just as Paul Steigerwald was explaining that Syko was getting himself to the front of the net, Geno again fired a shot that Syko finished off with another wrist shot. [Pens 5, Oilers 0] Garon was then pulled and replaced by Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers (who will henceforth be known as JDD for obvious reasons).Errey mentioned that Syko has never scored a hat trick before, which, in my mind, effectively jinxed him. (For anyone who doesn't know, Syko is the scoringest NHLer to never have gotten a hat trick in his career.) With just 1:27 left in the period, Pisani broke Flower's shutout. [Pens 5, Oilers 1]THIRD PERIOD (Yes, there is actually a third period in hockey.)Hmmm... I wonder if I can recap the third period without using profanity? Well, I'm going to try...Penner douched Letang by knocking him down over Flower after the whistle. He was penalized for roughing, but the Pens didn't score on their advantage AND as Penner emerged from the box, he got the puck and set up Tom Gilbert for the goal. [Pens 5, Oilers 2]Twenty-eight seconds later, Ales Hemsky stole the puck. Flower didn't get his right pad out far enough, so Hemsky was able to angle the puck around the goalie and into the net. [Pens 5, Oilers 3]"What is happening?" I shouted at my screen, not yet realizing that things were still heading downhill. Cooke did his best Brooks Orpik impression. He drilled Gilbert and then Gagner. Theo Peckham took exception to it and decided he wanted to prove something to his teammates by going after Cooke. FAIL. Peckham kept hitting Cooke even after the refs stepped in to separate them. Both men kept shouting at each other all the way to and while they were in their respective sin bins. After the dust finally settled, Cooke was given 2:00 for roughing, while Peckham 2:00 for instigating, 5:00 major for fighting, and 10:00 for misconduct. WHOOPS! Somebody went too far! So as a result, the Pens had an opportunity to score as much as they wanted for 5 minutes. A melee broke out in the middle of Peckham's penalty. Tyler Kennedy and Cole were each given roughing minors, and Souray was given 2:00 for refusal to play. So now, the Pens had a full 2:00 5-on-3. And they did not score. Both Max and Sid hit the post. But somehow, the Oilers used the disadvantage to their advantage: Souray came out of the box and took a lead pass for a breakaway. He didn't mess around. [Pens 5, Oilers 4]With 2:43 left in the game, Lubomir Visnovsky was called for delay of game after sending the puck over the glass. The Pens didn't capitalize on their advantage. As soon as Visnovsky was out of the box, JDD was pulled in favor of the extra attacker. Despite fighting all the way to the end (including a last ditch effort from Horcoff in which he plowed into and knocked down MAF), the Oilers were unable to tie the game. As Jay Caufield remarked, "The Pens escaped with the win."Oy. I've never been so upset with the Boys following a win before. They came thisclose to blowing it. They were lucky this time. Hopefully they learn something from this as they move forward. Evgeni Nabokov injured on final save of the shootout, extent of injury not yet released

EVGENI NABOKOV LANDS AKWARDLY ON THE FINAL SHOOTOUT SAVE AGAINST STL NABOKOV REMAINED MOTIONLESS ON THE ICE FOR SEVERAL MINUTES TEAMMATES GATHER AFTER THE WIN, THEN CALL FOR A TRAINER SAN JOSE SHARKS TRAINER RAY TUFTS HELPS NABOKOV OFF THE ICE Evgeni Nabokov was injured on the final save of the fourth round OT shootout in San Jose's Thursday night win against St Louis. Blues rookie center Patrick Berglund came down the middle of the ice and tried to snap a shot past Nabokov low to the left side. Berglund shot the puck wide off the outside of the post, but Nabokov extended his left leg and landed akwardly on the ice. As his teammates came off the bench to congratulate him, Nabokov remained face down on the ice in pain. Head Athletic Trainer Ray Tufts helped Evgeni off the ice. He was not able to put any pressure on the leg as he was helped into the locker room. An/nhl official speculated that landing on an over-extended leg may result in a sprain or a hyper-extension, but an official announcement on the extent of the injury has not been made yet by the San Jose Sharks. Nabokov stopped 25 of 29 shots on Thursday night to pick up his/nhl leading 10th win. Video of the 4-round shootout is available here. [Update] Sharks bitten on game’s final play - Ross McKeon for Yahoo Sports. [Update2] Backup goaltender Brian Boucher has stopped all 43 shots he has faced this season, earning shutouts on the road against Los Angeles (Oct 12th) and Tampa Bay (Oct 25th). Boucher shut out the St Louis Blues 2-0 in his first start as a San Jose Shark during the 2007-08 season, finishing with a 3-1-1 record, 1.76GAA, and .932SV% in limited duty. Boucher set two modern-day/nhl records in 2003-04 with a 5-game consecutive shutout streak and a scoreless sequence of 332:01 minutes. [Update3] David Pollak's Working the Corner blog posts the first Nabokov update, but under the/nhl's new injury disclosure policy the update does not detail how significant a hit the Sharks are going to take. Nabokov is listed as day-to-day with a lower body injury. Pollak also notes that goaltender Thomas Greiss has been called up from the AHL Worcester Sharks along with RW Brad Staubitz for the Dallas Stars game on Saturday, and that rookie left wing Jamie McGinn will be sent back down to Worcester.Source

Avalanche Continue Losing Skid, Downed 3-1 by Wild

Last night the Avalanche looked to still be reeling from the switch to Daylight Savings Time. The game started at 7:00 MT but they didn't pull their heads out of their asses until about an hour later when Darcy Tucker finally contributed to the team with his second goal of the season.By then it was too late as the Wild had already run up a 3-0 lead. And if you thought the Avalanche would be able to come back, here's an interesting stat the Altitudes mentioned: in Niklas Backstrom's last 114 games, he has allowed 3 goals or less in 97 of them.*That prospect in hand, I didn't have high hopes for the remainder of the game. Credit the Avs for fighting hard in the final minutes but it's getting a bit old to see them fall behind early and then spend the remainder of the game playing catchup. Are they timing their meals or afternoon naps incorrectly? I'm at a loss to understand how they can continue to come out so ill-prepared to start every game. Tucker making us proudDarcy Tucker must not even be getting his naps because he made an absolutely boneheaded move. Apparently at the end of the second period, he told Wild defenceman Nick Schultz that he was going to take out his knees. And then he actually tried to follow through on that promise.If that's the case, the.nhl should suspend him and Tony Granato should plant his ass in the press box for a few games after the suspension. There is no room for that in the game and it should not be tolerated in the slightest by the league or the team.If you're worried about who would replace him, don't be. T.J. Hensick came up last n ight and played superbly. In fact, it was Hensick's hard work and great pass which led to Tuckers goal in the second period. He also won key faceoffs all night long and made an excellent case for keeping him in the big leagues.The upside?The only redeeming point of the night for me was that I had a bet against the Avs. That's right, I bet against a team on a 4-game losing streak. It's completely counter to my strategy but I have zero faith in the team at the moment.Side notePeople talk about Pavel Datsyuk being a late-round steal but how about Backstrom? But due to the Pens' tight lipped injury policy, we'll just have to wait and see and hope our captain is okay...)FIRST PERIODThroughout the entire game, the ice was absolutely dreadful. Bodies were flying everywhere. Even Dany Sabourin wiped out late in the 3rd. The puck bounced around more than the Dow Jones Industrial Average. It lead to fluky goals and missed opportunities for both teams.Early on, Geno Malkin got tagged by a wicked slapshot in his left hand. He immediately left his glove on the ice and made his way back to the bench for treatment. Sid had a nice chance that Joey MacDonald stopped cold. Mad Max Talbot took the first penalty of the night for slashing. Bill Guerin fired a shot from the point, but Sabou was able to make a great glove save. The Isles didn't score on their advantage.Rob Scuderi lost the puck in the Pens' zone. An Islander took the puck and went 1-on-1, but Scudsie poked it free and took it right back. Jordan Staal threw the puck across the goal mouth, but Eric Godard couldn't get his stick down for the goal. Later, a blocked shot rebounded right to Doug Weight, who shot a knuckle puck towards the net. It hit Petr Sykora's stick and went up and over Sabou's glove. [Pens 0, Islanders 1]The Islanders tried to continue their offensive assault when they went 2-on-1, but Brooks Orpik got back and blocked the shot. With less than a minute left, Ruslan Fedotenko (whom I have nicknamed Raggedy Ruslan because of his Raggedy Andy pink cheeks) was tripped at the red line (no call), and Superstar was high sticked (no call). Just as the period came to an end, Tim Jackman and Matt Cooke exchanged words.SECOND PERIODJust at the start of the 2nd, Paul Steigerwald told us that Sid made a self-deprecating joke about his scoring slump: "Do they sell goals at Dick's?" It was then that Steigy and Bob Errey noted that Geno had not returned to the bench with his teammates. Then, Tyler Kennedy passed the puck to Mike Zigomanis. Ziggy fooled all the Isles, froze the goalie, and passed the puck back to TK, who easily scored on the wide open net. Just after the first whistle during the PP and right as Steigy and Errey just got finished saying that Geno would likely be gone for the rest of the game, the camera zoomed in on the Pens' runway to show Geno coming back to the ice. Despite his presence on the ice, the Pens didn't capitalize on their advantage.We were then shown a quick shot of the visiting Pens' dressing room. Raggedy Ruslan's former teammates left him a present in his stall - a Darth Tater! Then Geno drew a slashing penalty on Weight. The Pens again didn't score on their advantage. Weight emerged from the box and went 2-on-1 with Jackman. Weight passed the puck to Jackman, who promptly scored. [Pens 1, Islanders 2]Syko and Weight had a scary incident - they collided at center ice. Syko got right up and skated over to Weight to make sure he was okay (he was) and help him up. Andy Hilbert was left alone in the crease while four Pens were up high. There seemed to be some confusion among the Pens, and it led directly to a Hilbert goal. Mike Richards or Mike Awesome?

Being that Deutsche Bank had the marbles to slap a 0$ price tag on General Motors today I felt the need to upgrade Mike Richards. Thanks DB! A simple sell without a tag would have been fine. This is what I think of that price tag.There is something in the way that Mike Richards plays that just gets me sooo excited. He plays with a tenacity not seen in awhile. Not quite as flary as Ovy, not quite as pronounced as Crosby but so Bepop and Rock Steady like the old oxen you picked up on the Oregon Trail. They always gave me a tough time on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turts. A mean cleaness to his game. Take for example the hit on Schubert, Ottawa tough nut last Thursday. I can't get the video up here but please...please do yourself a favor and go to nhl.com/scores/ last Thursday, Flyers v. Senators and watch the video highlights because damn! The hit was so hard, so dirty but so clean. He hit Schubert so hard that it made Schubert lay on the ice for a bit afterwards thinking about how he messed up his breakwawy chance completely and how Mike Richards let him know how he messed up his opportunity. This hit, above his scoring ability and leadership qualities best incapsulates what makes Mike Richards so great. Wellwood-bashing is pathetic

I'm only going to say this once (hopefully). We all know what Wellwood did and didn't do as far as his conditioning goes prior to the season starting. We all know the various reasons for that (injuries, motivation). But when a guy steps back into the lineup and does what he has been doing over the past few weeks then it's time to let the past go. Temujin was at the Minny game and saw a fan with a sign that said Well Fed. On forums, people keep throwing out the fat jokes. Sure, I made a Wellwood photoshop when the conditioning issue was at it's climax, so I am to blame as well.But let me tell you something about Wellwood: he's a down-to-earth and honest man. Do you see him hiding in the shadows avoiding the conditioning issue when the hoards of media idiots repeatedly ask him about it? Not at all. In fact, Wellwood takes the abuse like a man and owns up to it. That is more than I can say than most pundits/players out there that were hacking him then and are doing so now still. I'm not really big into hacking into people's personal lives. Sure, they are celebrities and so they are under a microsope, but at some point here, I want to see Wellwood get angry and say: "You know what? I've talked this fucking issue to death and I'm done talking about it. I am moving forward. Ask me something else for christ's sakes!" Moving forward. That is something that we should be doing as well. Are we hacking Ethan Moreau for his hit and run incident this past summer? No.Everybody has their flaws. Most people belittle others to feel better about their own pathetic selves (I've been guilty of it too.) It might be Veterans Day everywhere else on Long Island today, but at Nassau Coliseum, it's Rookie's Day. Word is that Islanders No. 1 draft pick Josh Bailey definitely will make his debut against Philadelphia this afternoon at 2. It's uncertain whose spot he's taking in the lineup, but it's most likely that of center Mike Comrie, who underwent an examination of his surgically repaired hip on Monday. When I spoke to Bailey last Friday, we talked about watching some of the other first-round draft picks who got their chance to make it and succeeded in sticking with their teams. "I'm friends with a lot of them," Bailey said. "I like to see what they're doing. If their game is on TV, I'll watch to see how they're making out. I keep in touch a little bit. It's encouraging to see guys my age being able to step up in the. It's something you want to do as well. It can be done. I feel confident you can do it well." There may be a conditioning gap for Bailey to overcome since this will be his first game action in nearly seven weeks, but he's up for the challenge. "That might make a little bit of a difference," Bailey said. "But there's no excuses. When you're back in the lineup, you have to perform, and I plan on doing that, too. I feel good. SAN JOSE SHARKS LW PROSPECT LUKAS KASPAR NOV 2 2007 AGAINST LA SAN JOSE SHARKS LW LUKAS KASPAR - FILE PHOTO JON SWENSON Lukas Kaspar, the Sharks first-round selection in the 2004/nhl Entry Draft, began the season in San Jose after making the team out of training-camp thanks to an impressive pre-season. Kaspar was effective offensively while being defensively responsible. He played in the Sharks' first 6 games of the season where he scored his first/nhl career goal (also a game winner), in a 1-0 shutout win at Los Angeles on October 12th. During time spent in San-Jose, Kaspar played mostly on the fourth-line while averaging 7 minutes of ice-time. The Sharks later opted to send Kaspar down to the AHL to play for the Worcester Sharks while recalling rugged right wing Brad Staubitz and left wing Jamie McGinn. Kaspar has accumulated 117 points in 227 games during 3 seasons in the AHL. A 23 year-old native of Most, Czech Republic, Kaspar is a skill forward with size (6-foot-2, 225 pounds). For a player of his size, Kaspar is also a fluid skater with soft hands around the net. He has goal scoring tools in a heavy shot and a quick release, but he often elects to create through the passing game rather than finishing a play himself. Kaspar is a creative offensive player that has noticeable improved his defensive play since joining the Sharks organization. He projects as a solid two-way player in the/nhl, and currently is one of the Sharks top offensive prospects at the AHL level. Sharkspage was able to catch up with Lukas Kaspar and find out how he is doing since being sent down to Worcester. Kaspar is a charismatic young-man with a good sense of humor, and was kind enough to answer a few questions from Max Giese about starting the season with the San Jose Sharks, how having fellow Czechs Milan Michalek and Tomas Plihal helped while he was in the/nhl, his linemates in Worcester, what it was like to be drafted, and how he has worked to improve the defensive side of his game. [MG] You had a very strong pre-season and scored your first/nhl goal this year while playing in the Sharks’ first six games of the season. How did you enjoy your time in San Jose and does that time in San Jose make you that much hungrier to get back to the/nhl? [LK] I loved it there in San Jose and it was a dream come true playing in the/nhl for the Sharks. The time there makes me want to work my ass off to get back there. [MG] You made your/nhl debut last-season and played in three games for the Sharks. What are the differences between what Ron Wilson and Todd McLellan asked of you to do on the ice? [LK] Nothing really. It was all about just making and sticking with the team under both coaches. [MG] Does having fellow Czech born players like Milan Michalek and Tomas Plihal in the Sharks organization help make you feel more comfortable on and off the ice in San Jose? [LK] Yes it helps a lot. It’s nice to have someone to talk to about things and to hang out with. [MG] Who was your roommate on the road with the San Jose Sharks? [LK] Milan Michalek was my roommate and he was great. [MG] I heard he has quite the sense of humor? [LK] All Czechs do (laughs). [MG] What were your emotions like after being notified that you were being put on waivers and being sent back to Worcester? [LK] I was disappointed obviously and who wouldn’t be? Playing in the/nhl is my dream, but there isn’t anything I can do about it at this time. [MG] When San Jose assigned you to Worcester, what were some of the areas of your game they wanted you to continue to work on and what do you believe you need to do to stick in the/nhl? [LK] I talked to the coaches and they just said to play hard every shift. They said it wasn’t that I played myself out of San Jose, but they wanted to try new players and add new ingredients to the team. [MG] How do you feel you have performed recently in Worcester after being reassigned? How does the team look this year? [LK] I have played well and have been on an assortment of different line combinations. I have enjoyed playing with guys like Steven Zalewski, Mike Morris, and Riley Armstrong. We have a good team and I am trying to help them win some games. [MG] Do you ever feel any added pressure on yourself because you were a first-round draft pick? [LK] No I don’t think so. You get drafted high and then get signed which is nice, but after that you aren’t any different than the rest of the guys and you have to work just as hard. [MG] Going back to the 2004/nhl Entry draft, can you describe your emotions when the Sharks traded up to draft you with their first pick of the draft 22nd overall? [LK] Very excited and happy. Playing in the/nhl has always been my dream. At the time though I didn’t really know much about the/nhl. I collected hockey cards and was able to see the Stanley Cup finals, but that was it. The Sharks were always a favorite of mine because of their cool logo. [MG] Before the draft did you suspect the Sharks were targeting you with their pick? [LK] No not at all. I remember sitting there with my family and the Sharks made a trade with New Jersey to move up to 22nd overall and I said to myself and to my family that they are not taking me. I was surprised and shocked when they picked me. I went to the/nhl combine in Toronto and was interviewed by 22 teams, but the Sharks weren’t one of them and I never talked to them before the draft. Some teams spoke with me in the Czech Republic during the season, but the Sharks never did. I also didn’t know much about California. [MG] Coming out of the draft you were known as a pure goal scorer, does that fairly describe your game? [LK] I don’t think I ever was a pure goal scorer. It wasn’t as if I was just sitting there waiting for the puck and then would shoot it in the net. I have always tried to make plays and pass the puck first. I come from the same town as guys like Jiri Sleger and Martin Rucinski. I had the same coach from third grade to the eight grade and he always taught us not to be selfish and that a pass was always better than taking the shot. Then I came over to North America and all they do is get on me to shoot more now. [MG] Now your game seems to be about solid two-way play and you even kill penalties. What was behind that transition of style of play? [LK] Soon as I was drafted the Sharks told me I had to work on my defensive game. It was something that I always knew I had to work on and always believed that I had the ability to do so, but now I can honestly say that I have made huge progress and can say that I am a two-way player. [MG] What do you believe you need to work on to get back to the/nhl and stick? [LK] It’s tough to say and all I can do is play my hardest. Right now I am trying to put up more points during my time down in Worcester. [MG] Have you set any goals for yourself this season? [LK] No doubt I want to get back to and play in the/nhl this-season. That would be a dream come true to go back to San Jose. He was a beast tonight. He scored the tying goal and assisted on the game winner. Heck, he pretty much created the game-winner. He totally overwhelmed Detroit in the third period. We assume all those Staal-for-whoever trade rumors will be put to rest for a little while at least.-Staal's four points were a career high for a single game. Staal's last multi-point regular season game was a three-point effort in a 4-1 win at Tampa Bay Jan. 10. The only other hat trick in his career was in a 6-5 overtime win at Toronto Feb. 10, 2007.-We know on paper this game is just two points against a Western Conference opponent. In terms of the standings, this game means as much as a game against Nashville or Columbus, but we all know that it means much more than that to the team. They can say all they want about not worrying about last season or not caring about Marian Hossa, but this win has to be so satisfying.-That said, we're sure the Penguins would take the Stanley Cup banner and the all-world two-way foward over a overtime win against a non-conference foe in November.-What in the world happened to Detroit's vaunted defense? It totally collapsed in the third period.-How about Michel Therrien sticking the great Mike Zigomanis out there in key situations throughout the third period to take faceoffs? Do the Penguins have that much faith in Zigomanis' other abilities or were they just desperate for some faceoff wins?-Think about this. Lost in Transition: Old Media Remains Three Strides Behind Dmitry Chesnokov

Once again we are indebted to Dmitry Chesnokov for bringing us news the mainstream media couldn't. You may have heard: our Alexander Semin recently shared a few reflections on the Obama of our sport with Chesnokov, which appeared in the Russian newspaper SovetskySport. Now that the uproar has settled (a bit) over Semin's truth-telling, it's appropriate and instructive to reflect on where we are in our 3.0 world of hockey coverage. Semin, like me and a few hundred thousand other hockey fans around the world, watches Sidney Crosby and sees a better skating Ron Francis. And there's nothing wrong with that. The young Nova Scotian is lethally efficient. However, he was also anointed The Next One before he'd scored his first/nhl secondary assist. And so Semin, like hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of others, wondered: what's all the Madison Avenue fuss about? The temerity! Interestingly, though, the outcry against his published musings came less from Canadian hockey fans with understandable pride in their native star or Penguins' fans -- no small number of whom actually voiced support for Semin's stance in page after page of comments left at the TSN and Yahoo coverage pages of the story. One reader comment read thusly: "I definitely think it's interesting to hear a guy's take on Crosby likethis. I don't think I've heard any other players talk about him thisway. Makes me wonder about other players take on him." Me, too. Interestingly, it was the/nhl, through its typical clandestine machinations, that sprang into a stealth defense of its poster boy. The Capitals of course were placed in a spectacularly awkward position once Semin's sober reasonings reached international consciousness. Truth, in this instance, was no defense.But note, too, that when Capitals' head coach Bruce Boudreau was pressed to comment on the matter all he could offer was a fourth party's conjecture about the story's origins and a smile. More telling was Penguins' coach Michel Therrien taking a full week to formulate a response, and a not very persuasive or cogent one at that (par for the course from that source). A PR firm likely came up with that, which given the subject matter would be so apropos. The English edition of Semin's assault on hockey's version of Creationism appeared where it ought to have: at puck daddy. Hip, cutting edge thoughts lodged at a hip, cutting edge outlet. So thanks to new media, a central question at the heart of post-lockout hockey was at long last raised for healthy public scrutiny. Old media in its coverage of Sidney Crosby has been, going on four years now, disconcertingly reminiscent of the complicit White House press pack that covered Camelot: In the tank. Perhaps that's because a corporate, herd mindset leads to corporate, herd writing, broadcasting.It needs to be stated, explicitly: the most interesting and compelling story of the season to date was unearthed, promulgated, and fomented by new media. Don't mistake, as some in media and the/nhl have, Chesnokov's SovetskySport affiliation with that of an old media alliance. Chesnokov is a lawyer by training and trade, without one day's formal training in journalism. (Which is why we like him!) He's principled, honest, hard-charging, and has a passion for hockey. In other words, a poor fit for many American old media outlets. He seeks out stories that aren't being told in the conventions of contemporary old media. As such he's shamed everyone on the hockey beat in this town for two years running. It was Chesnokov who approached me with his countrymen's complaints of what Reebok's uniform systems were doing to their gloves and boots last season (drowning them). All that led to was the abolition, by all 30/nhl teams, of the uniform material Reebok was using. Up in the Verizon Center press box, Chesnokov sits among bloggers, whom he calls friends and the present and future of National Hockey League media.Chesnokov doesn't set out to shame the lazy, robotic, and tenured in the MSM. They do that well enough on their own. On at least a dozen occasions the past two years he's walked up to MSM beat reporters with offers to bring them to notable stories, stories at times carrying international impact, offering to work as translator with Washington's elite Russian talents. He did this most recently with a Washington television reporter when he knew he was having his mid-week sit-down with Semin right before Halloween. But again he got MSM indifference. Rightly proud of his elite/nhl countrymen, Chesnokov wanted a fuller, truer side of Semin recorded in the English press, so he offered to pose questions from Greg Wyshynski and me for our respective use.And before we go any further, let's acknowledge the portrait of Semin as it's been brought to you by old media the past four or five years. What words should we use in this endeavor -- iconoclast, withdrawn, enigmatic, selfish, solitary, immature? And yet the Alexander Semin revealed in Chesnokov's interview was thoughtful and introspective, candid, engaging, damned interesting, frank. Wouldn't want to read any more of that, would we?Chesnokov is a naturalized American, and the freedoms he associates with that allegiance -- free speech foremost among them -- he savors and honors in ways I think many Americans take for granted. "If we can mock the president and the vice president of our country, the very people who run our country, on 'Saturday Night Live' each week, why then is Sidney Crosby sacred?" he asked me, rhetorically.So desperate were some of the back-channel attacks against Chesnokov in the last two weeks that there was even the suggestion that somehow he'd managed to mangle Semin's replies -- a direct attack on his reportorial integrity. That slur went silent not long after the attackers realized that all 55 minutes of Semin's musings over sushi went straight into Chesnokov's recorder. Also, there's this: we are at day 14 since the interview, and neither Semin nor his agent want to modify a single word from the interview. Fidelity in translation. And mind you, this is the same Chesnokov sought out by the likes of Michael Farber, the dean of hockey journalism at SI, when he seeks court with the Ovechkin family. (Farber, incidentally, sent Chesnokov a congratulatory email for the Semin interview on November 10.) It is also the same Chesnokov who translates, gratis, press interactions between Russians and North American media whenever/nhl teams (most especially including the Caps) ask. Interesting, isn't it, that the lone instance of "translation error" for this new media reporter would be associated with the topic of one Sidney Crosby?Every Halloween hereafter, we in HockeyWashington, let us freshly recite Semin's scary words for the blue blazers in the/nhl's league office:"What's so special about [Crosby]? I don't see anything special there. Yes, he does skate well, has a good head, good pass. But there's nothing else. Even if you compare him to Patrick Kane from Chicago ... [Kane] is a much more interesting player. The way he moves, his deking abilities, his thinking on the ice and his anticipation of the play is so superb."I think that if you take any player, even if he is "dead wood," and start promoting him, you'll get a star. Especially if he scores 100 points. No one is going to care about anyone else. No one is going to care whether he possesses great skill. Let's say you put someone in front of the net and let him deflect pucks in, and he scored 50 goals; everyone will say "Wow!" and then hand him a $10 million per year contract. That's what they like here."And in Russia people like beautiful hockey, and not dump and chase. I just don't get it, why when a player is skating up the ice and no one is attacking him, he dumps the puck into the offensive zone and then chases it? Why would you do this if there is no one forechecking you? I understand that if there is someone coming at you and you don't know whether you can get past that player, then you can dump the puck, pass it or shoot. But if not, then hold on to the puck, skate forward, create a chance."Why would you want to dump the puck and then chase after it and crash into the boards? I don't know. But that's just my opinion." We'd do well also to acknowledge the role that Chesnokov has played in North American hockey coverage the past two summers, when many hockey beat reporters are off covering golf, tennis, NASCAR, or whatever. Photos, fun files, and intrigue from Alexander Ovechkin's Moscow summers are largely the work of Chesnokov and SovetskySport then. His warm weather work has been a blessing of a time-passing bridge for hockey fans orphaned by the offseason. Nashville goalie Dan Ellis withstands firing range, faces franchise record 57 shots on goal emerging with 4-3 OT win, SJ suffers first loss at home

With San Jose giving up odd man rushes and scoring chances by the handful, Nabokov pulled incredible highlight reel saves out of his goalie hat against Manny Malhotra, Jason Chimera and Rick Nash to give the Sharks a chance to win the game. On a rare rainy Tuesday night in San Jose, it was Dan Ellis working a little magic against the Sharks as he stopped 54 of a franchise record 57 shots on goal to earn a 4-3 overtime win. The Predators were reeling. Shutout twice against Vancouver and Colorado, Nashville lost the first 3 games of a long 6-game road trip to sink to a 6-7-1 record. Dan Ellis withstood a barrage early as the Sharks outshot Nashville 43-18 after 40 minutes. Ellis held firm as San Jose pressured with Mike Grier, Joe Pavelski and Patrick Marleau outnumbering Nashville in front 3-to-1 and taking repeated whacks at the puck. The Predators received a break early when a quick whistle negated a Joe Thornton goal on a 4-on-3. Thornton tried to stuff a puck home short side. Patrick Marleau took a chop at a rebound in front, and Thornton reversed around behind the net and fired a backhand by Ellis. Referee Dave Jackson instantly waived off the play. One referee skated to the scorers table to explain the call, another explained the situation to Sharks head coach Todd McLellan, but no one explained the call to the 17,496-strong sellout crowd. Play resumed tied 0-0. Patrick Marleau set up Devin Setoguchi for the first goal of the game at 16:52. Setoguchi launched a blistering slapshot from the left faceoff circle that beat Ellis cleanly for his 8th goal of the season. Marleau was skating with confidence, blowing by players in the neutral zone with speed and backchecking hard. He was easily the best player on the ice not wearing a #39 Nashville Predators jersey. The Sharks added another goal 16:53 into the second after a Joe Thornton point blank shot created a juicy rebound teed up for Rob Blake. All 4 lines were creating scoring chances for San Jose. Led by the goaltending of Ellis, the Predators continued to battle back in the game regardless of the score, regardless of shot totals or momentum. Nashville right wing Patrick Hornqvist dumped a puck in on Brian Boucher. Preds captain Jason Arnott beat Rob Blake to the loose rebound, snapping a backhand that beat Boucher five hole. Nashville's forecheck in the third period created pressure on the Sharks defense moving the puck up ice. Another odd bounce on a dump in as the puck deflects to Vernon Fiddler in the slot. Quick shot with traffic in front beats Boucher glove side. Score tied 2-2. San Jose's big line of Marleau, Thornton and Setoguchi answered back 27 seconds later. Thornton took a pass behind the net, and hit a driving Setoguchi in front with a slick backhand feed. Setoguchi deposits it for his team leading 9th goal of the season (tied with Ryane Clowe). The Sharks are keeping their feet moving, dumping the puck deep in the Nashville zone, and using their size and speed to dominate play along the boards and in the neutral zone. Tomas Plihal takes a 2 minute hooking call at 11:52, and 1 second after the penalty expires J.P. Dumont and Ryan Suter combine for point blank shots on Brian Boucher. The rebound on Dumont's shot deflects to Suter open in front, and the son of former Sharks defenseman Gary Suter buries it to tie the game at 3-3. Ellis again holds firm against a furious Sharks rally as seconds tick down in regulation. In overtime, Ryane Clowe pulls up and fires a long shot from the redline between Jason Arnott and Ryan Suter. Arnott waives a stick at Patrick Marleau, and Marleau explodes to gather the rebound and snap a shot blocker side. Save of the game by Dan Ellis 3:50 into OT. After a faceoff loss by Roenick, a pair of Predators drive the net and create traffic in front of Boucher. Defenseman Ville Koistinen takes two strides to his right and hammers home the game winning goal from 30 feet out. Dan Ellis stopped 54 of 57 shots to earn his 5th win of the season (5-7-1, .890SV%, 3.19GAA). The Sharks had 16 power play shots in the first 2 periods but finished 1-7 overall with the man advantage. Brian Boucher stopped 25 of 29 shots in a losing effort (3-1-1, .936SV%, 1.59GAA, 2SO). But thanks to a spectacular effort by Predators’ goalie Dan Ellis, as well as a couple of one-goal rallies in the third period, Nashville came away with a 4-3 overtime victory that in many ways defied description. The Predators won on a night they tied a decade-old franchise record for shots allowed (57), in a building where they’d tasted victory just once in 12 previous trips, and against a team that had gone 9-0 at HP Pavilion to start the season.
